What is PRP therapy?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a minimally-invasive procedure that promotes the body’s natural repair process in response to injury. While platelets are most commonly known for their blood clotting properties, they are also natural sources of growth factors, proteins, and other products that can help kick-start the body’s repair process in degenerative or injured tissue.
The PRP uses your own concentrated platelets and growth factors to stimulate and enhance the body’s own healing response to treat acute injury, inflammation, or chronic degenerative disease. PRP therapy is a great option for those who want to treat the source of their pain rather than purely mask the symptoms.
Our Approach
After a blood sample is obtained from a patient, the blood is put in a centrifuge which separates the blood into its many components. Platelet-rich plasma can then be collected and delivered to an injured area of bone or soft tissue, such as a tendon or ligament, via an injection. Ultrasound or Xray guidance can assist in the precise placement of PRP in a process that takes a total of 20-30 minutes.
A local anesthetic or sometimes light sedation is used. This results in minimal discomfort. Since PRP is prepared from your own blood, there is no risk or rejection or disease transmission and virtually no risk of infection.
What are the benefits of PRP therapy?
The benefits of PRP therapy include:
+ Cost-effective: PRP treatment is a quick, cost-effective, outpatient procedure that’s harvested from 60-120 cc’s of your own blood. No hospital or facility costs are incurred.
+ Efficient: PRP Therapy is a 60-minute in-office procedure. Because it is a minimally-invasive treatment, you may be able to return to your daily activities relatively quickly. Depending on your injury or condition, it may take as long as 3-4 months to make a full return to your daily activities.
+ Avoidance of invasive surgery: Bone marrow concentrate therapy administered in concert with PRP injections may help patients avoid surgery, or may decrease dependence on pain medication.
+ All-natural: By using your own harvested platelets, you are harnessing your body’s own, natural healing properties.
