Q&A with Dr. LaSalle
What made you want to become a doctor?
I grew up as an athlete and was always fascinated with how the human body works. In college, I loved human and biological sciences, and I found the practice of medicine to be a very satisfying way to connect meaningfully with other people.
What do you love about practicing medicine?
I love being challenged by new situations and different problems. In the field of pain medicine, in particular, we manage an extremely broad array of clinical conditions, so on any given day, we don’t know exactly what we’re going to be up against. I find that intellectually stimulating. It’s also incredibly rewarding to be able to make a direct and tangible difference in another person’s life and to be able to help them live more actively and more fully.
What is your favorite subspecialty topic?
I find regenerative medicine fascinating from a conceptual standpoint. Our bodies have incredibly sophisticated and complex mechanisms for tissue healing and repair. I find this field attractive because rather than trying to fix something from external means (ie medications) in this field we try to harness the body’s innate healing potential and manipulate these inborn mechanisms to rejuvenate damaged tissue.
What do you wish you could tell every patient (and they would actually do) and why?
I always try and remind patients of the importance of staying physically active, either through physical therapy or some form of exercise program. I think this is such a crucial component of recovery but also of maintenance – building the physical resilience to prevent the same problems from happening over and over again.
What is the most important factor in a doctor-patient relationship and why?
Trust. If a patient does not trust a provider to give the most beneficial and appropriate recommendations, then he or she will be less likely to commit to the recommended treatments. Conversely, if a physician doesn’t trust a patient, then he or she will not listen attentively to the patient and will be less likely to take each of the patient’s individual needs into account.
What’s your favorite thing about Hudson Medical Group?
I love the camaraderie amongst our team members, providers, and staff alike. We’re great at working together to solve a problem. And I like the multi-disciplinary atmosphere. We have anesthesiologists, physiatrists, neurologists, all working together to help our patients live more comfortable lives. We all have the same goal and having various team members that all come from different backgrounds allows us to be the most effective, thorough, and creative that we can be.
