The science of acupuncture

Live a pain-free, more balanced life with acupuncture, a 3,000-year-old traditional, Eastern holistic therapy that’s used to treat a wide range of health concerns, from chronic pain and illness to stress and anxiety.

Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of health concerns, from chronic pain and illness to stress and anxiety. It stimulates specific points near or on the surface of the skin (acupuncture points), that trigger activation of opioid systems, positive changes in brain chemistry and improved blood flow and circulation.

What is medical acupuncture?

Medical/neurofunctional acupuncture is a precise technique that involves manual or electronic stimulation of the acupuncture needles administered at specific neuro-reactive sites with the intention of neuromodulation. Neuromodulation is the influence of the nervous system to regulate itself in response to internal and external stimuli. A neurofunctional approach hones in on the most common dysfunctions associated with pain such as biomechanical, neurological, muscular, and psychoemotional. The goal is to promote self-regulation of the nervous system which in turn promotes positive change at a neurological, cellular, and metabolic level.

How Acupuncture works

Acupuncture stimulates specific points near or on the surface of the skin (acupuncture points), which can alter biochemical and physiological conditions within the body. Because acupuncture points are targeted areas of electrical sensitivity, inserting needles at these points stimulates sensory receptors that trigger:

+ Activation of opioid systems
+ Positive changes in brain chemistry
+ Improved blood flow and circulation

What to expect

Initial Evaluation
To determine the type of acupuncture treatment that would be most beneficial, your practitioner will ask you about your symptoms, lifestyle, medical history, diet, and more.

A common treatment plan for a single condition would typically involve 1-2 treatments per week. The number of treatments will depend on the condition being treated and its severity, but 6-12 treatments are common.
